About

Dr. Gabriela Vokic is an Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of World Languages and Literatures. She earned her Ph.D. from Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN), specializing in phonetics, laboratory phonology, and second language acquisition.

Her most recent research focuses on topics in language contact and bilingualism, such as the acquisition of phonological systems by bilingual speakers and pedagogical approaches in heritage language instruction. She has presented her work at numerous academic conferences and has published in esteemed scholarly journals both in the U.S. and internationally.

Dr. Vokic’s contributions to teaching and education at SMU have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor Award (2016), the Phi Beta Kappa Golden Apple Professor Award (2014), the Rotunda Outstanding Professor Award (2010), and the HOPE Award (2007).
